Odometer indicates 76000, I have another dash with 99000, not sure if either is original.

ima guestimate actual mileage is 175000

(ima also guestimate a drivetrain swap to be a lot of work n swearing)

I’ve seen a few with 302's and C4's, basically a fox body swap.

Also this:

why would you do that, when you can do this: (B230 s are so easy to tune)

or this... (that B18 can handle plenty of boost, or find a B20 and still look stock with more displacement...)

or even this.... (small block v8? fits right in there.)

Agreed, ‘Let’s take a very interesting old car full of quirks and personality, and turn it into a toaster.’

That would be a ton of work - and ten tons of fun when it was done. I have to agree with another take here though - hacking this work of art up would be awful. These are fairly rare, correct? I wonder if it could be done in such a way that it wouldn’t be impossible to undo it.

Oh who am I kidding?  I’d have to do the swap.  #oppoislife

This thing is probably pushing 200K miles and lives in Ohio, I doubt it is nice enough to be worth restoring. Looks like a great engine swap candidate to me.

seriously, inject and turbo the B18, you’ll get more power for less effort and expense.

I don’t understand how giving a cool old car a cleaner, more powerful engine turns it into a toaster. Especially when that engine is as good as the Miata's.

The way I see it, it’s the same basic drivetrain (1.8 I4, manual, rwd), just with more power, more gears, and an L SD.

Yeah, but the BP comes with a 6MT and LSD.

the rear-end is easy enough to replace with your choice of LSD-equipped stick-axles.... the trans is a little trickier, but there are adapter plates for Getrag and Tremec transmissions to Volvo. The M azda gearbox would probably fit under there, but there isn’t an off-the-shelf solution for it as far as I know.

The Amazon is a solid axle car, can’t use Miata diff unless you do a custom rear suspension. Also have to redo every single drivetrain mount and build a custom driveshaft, really not worth it unless you have $$$ to spend on the conversion.

You use the Miata’s roller skate chassis and put the Volvo body on top.

Kinja'd!!!

You’ll have to figure out how to attach the suspension, diff, and etc to the body but it’s feasible!

i dunno, i kind of think that you would be turning the volvo into a bit of a dog....... the volvo weighs probably around 3300#, and the miata is a good bit closer to 2300#........ it can be done, but you would need to find some more torque from somewhere, or regear. either way you are going to be making some compromises. that and the volvo is heavier higher up, that is that has a higher center of gravity, and would feel a bit rolly polly around corners. you could add some heavier sway bars to help out.......... they a reason you are stuck on the miata driveline?.......
